Baccarat for Beginners — Rules, Odds, and Your First 100 Hands

April 7, 2026 5 min readby BaccaratIQ Team

What is Baccarat?

Baccarat (specifically Punto Banco) is the simplest casino card game. You bet on one of three outcomes: Player wins, Banker wins, or Tie. That's it.

No decisions to make after betting. No skill required during the hand. The dealer handles everything according to fixed rules.

Why it's popular:

  • Lowest house edge of any table game (1.06% on Banker)
  • Fast rounds (under 30 seconds per hand)
  • Simple to learn, impossible to play "wrong"
  • Favorite of high rollers worldwide

Card Values

Baccarat uses a unique scoring system where only the last digit of the total matters:

| Card | Value | |------|-------| | 2-9 | Face value | | 10, J, Q, K | 0 | | Ace | 1 |

Examples:

  • 7 + 5 = 12 → score is 2
  • King + 6 = 6 → score is 6
  • 8 + Ace = 9 → score is 9 (this is the best possible hand, called a "natural")

Remember: The goal is to get as close to 9 as possible. Tens and face cards are worth zero.

How a Hand Plays Out

  1. Place your bet — Player, Banker, or Tie
  2. Two cards each — Player and Banker both receive 2 cards face-up
  3. Natural check — If either side has 8 or 9, the hand ends immediately
  4. Third card rules — If no natural, fixed rules determine whether a third card is drawn
  5. Compare totals — Higher total wins. If equal, it's a Tie

Third Card Rules (Simplified)

Player draws if: Player total is 0-5 Player stands if: Player total is 6-7

Banker rules depend on the Banker's total AND the Player's third card. These rules are complex, but you don't need to memorize them — the dealer (or our software) handles it automatically.

You never make a decision about drawing cards. The rules are fixed. Your only decision is where to bet.

The Three Bets

Banker Bet (Best Option)

  • House edge: 1.06%
  • Payout: 1:1 minus 5% commission
  • Why it's best: Banker wins slightly more often (50.68%) due to the third card rules

Player Bet (Second Best)

  • House edge: 1.24%
  • Payout: 1:1 (no commission)
  • Slightly worse because Player draws first, giving Banker an informational advantage

Tie Bet (Avoid This)

  • House edge: 14.36%
  • Payout: 8:1 or 9:1
  • Terrible bet. The high payout is a trap. Ties occur only ~9.5% of the time

The #1 rule in baccarat: Never bet Tie. The 14.36% house edge means you lose money 7x faster than betting Banker. The attractive 8:1 payout doesn't compensate for how rarely it hits.

Side Bets: Pairs

Player Pair / Banker Pair:

  • Pays 11:1 when the first two cards are the same rank
  • House edge: ~10%
  • Fun occasional bet, but not recommended as a regular play

Bankroll Management for Beginners

| Session Budget | Base Bet | Hands You Can Play | |----------------|----------|-------------------| | $100 | $2 | ~50 hands | | $500 | $5 | ~100 hands | | $1,000 | $10 | ~100 hands |

Rules:

  1. Never bet more than 2-5% of your session budget per hand
  2. Set a win limit (e.g., +50% of budget) and a loss limit (e.g., -50%)
  3. Walk away when you hit either limit
  4. Never chase losses
